Home Buying Questionnaire

Before I spend lots of time working with a home buyer, I like to have a really good sense of what the buyer is looking for. This may seem obvious, but unfortunately, many agents do little more than search the database on price and bedroom count. While price is generally a limiting factor and bedroom count is an important feature, most folks have an awful lot more that goes into the decision process. I like to know as much as possible before I get started.

  1. If you could have any home in town, regardless of price, what would it be like?
  2. Is there a particular part of town you would like to be in? Are you commuiting to a particular location?
  3. How many bedrooms do you absolutely need? How many would be preferable?
  4. How many bathrooms?
  5. Is the presence of a garage important? A yard? Off-street parking?
  6. Are there particular color schemes you do or don't like?
  7. Do you prefer carpet or hardwood?
  8. Is it important to you to have forced air heat, radiant heat, central air, or ___?
  9. What price range do you expect to be looking at?
  10. Are you preapproved for a loan? By whom?
  11. Do you currently own? If so, do you plan to sell?
  12. If you rent, when does your lease run out?
  13. When do you want to move?
  14. Do you have any particular accessibility needs?
  15. Are there any neighborhoods in which you have particular interest?
  16. Are there any schools you would especially like to be near?
