Do I Need a Lawyer?
Maybe.
When deciding whether or not to hire a lawyer to review your real estate documents, the most important point to keep in mind is this: real estate agents are not lawyers. We cannot provide you with legal advice. While we are happy to complete the "form" contract, and help you read through it, we really cannot give you context around the legal implications of it, advise you one way or another. We can assure you that the contract has been drafted by competent attorneys. We can also help you understand the strategic implications of a provision, from the perspective of your bargaining position. Frankly, very few people hire a lawyer to review their contract papers, but, as non-lawyers, real estate sales people are obligated to suggest it.
