As I've purchased properties for myself, I've used a variety of home inspectors-- everyone from big companies with lengthy checklists to General Contractors who just vouched for the overall integrity of a property. (So far, I've turned down properties where I believed a structural engineer might be needed). After a lengthy search, I have generally settled on using Aubrey Storm of Pillar to Post for my own inspections. Mr. Storm always on time (usually early) and works from a prepared checklist. He delivers his inspections typed, rather than using a handwritten carbon-copy system others have used. I have been really pleased with his work; he is the first person I call when I need an inspection.
